Otoliths Reveal the History of Fish Energy Expenditure

—Development of a Method to Reconstruct Fish Energy Expenditure Using a Novel Indicator—
A research group led by Associate Professor Kozue Nishida of the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Society, Institute of Science Tokyo, Dr. Kozue Ando (doctoral student at the time of research: Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo), and Professor Yusuke Yokoyama of the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, has developed a new method to reconstruct fish energy expenditure by analyzing trace amounts of naturally occurring radiocarbon in the otoliths of captive cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus notatus).
◆ A new method has been developed to accurately estimate fish energy expenditure using naturally occurring radiocarbon.
◆ The method developed in this study eliminates the species- and growth stage-dependent effects that have been challenges in conventional fish energy expenditure estimation research, enabling comparisons of energy expenditure across a wide range of fish species and growth stages.
◆ Since fish energy expenditure is influenced by environmental factors such as water temperature, it significantly affects individual survival strategies. By using the method developed in this study to easily obtain information on the energy expenditure of various fish species that was previously unknown, it is expected to be applied to predicting physiological and metabolic responses of fish to climate change, including global warming.
